Scientific Concept

The problem

Global electricity production is mainly based on fossil fuels, leading to significant rise of atmospheric CO2 concentrations and depletion of carbon-based energy resources.

The Initiative

Partial replacement of fossil fuels as well as utilization of CO2. Europe has set strategic objectives aiming to increase the share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), focusing at the same time on the development of electricity storage solutions.

The Concept

The Power – to Gas concept comprises the conversion of electricity into H2, which can be stored, transported and further converted into higher hydrocarbons (e.g. CH4, diesel)

H2O electrolysis (or H2O/CO2 co-electrolysis)

The conversion of electrical energy into hydrogen (or syngas) is achieved electrochemically by using an electrolyser.
